The Young Friends of Jazz St. Louis and Young Friends of the Saint Louis Science Center are teaming up once again to host the 2nd annual Jazz Under the Stars on January 26, 2012 from 6 – 9 pm. This “see-and-be-seen” event will be held in the James S. McDonnell Planetarium at the Saint Louis Science Center in Forest Park.

Last year’s inaugural event provided more than 250 attendees with a much-needed break from the winter blues. This year’s event will feature Marty Morrison & Friends featuring Jason Swagler, Adam Maness, and Bob DeBoo with special guest Erin Bode! Drummer Morrison has established himself as one of the most in-demand jazz drummers in the St. Louis area and Bode was dubbed the “most magnificent solo performer on the planet” by the BBC following her latest album, A Cold December Night.

Enjoy food (including Rue Lafayette), drinks (from Barefoot Wine, Square One Brewery and Distillery, and Augusta Brewing Company), live music and the beauty of the great outdoors with two star shows throughout the evening, all while staying toasty warm. Claire Kellett, co-anchor of Awake with News 4, will emcee the evening.

Frank Vignola with Vinny Raniolo

Frank Vignola is one of the most extraordinary guitarists performing before the public today. His stunning virtuosity has made him the guitarist of choice for many of the world’s top musicians, including Ringo Starr, Madonna, Donald Fagen, Wynton Marsalis, Tommy Emmanuel, Mark O Connor, the Boston Pops, the New York Pops, and guitar legend Les Paul, who named Vignola to his “Five Most Admired Guitarists List” for the Wall Street Journal. Vignola’s jaw-dropping technique explains why the New York Times deemed him “one of the brightest…stars of the guitar”.

At age 26, Vinny Raniolo has already performed at some of the top venues in the world with his music. Vinny is dedicated to his career as a professional touring musician, studio musician, educator, and arranger. Vinny has been on numerous recordings with Bucky Pizzarelli, Tommy Emmanuel, Tony Trishka, Matt Flinner, Ken Peplowski to name a few. Vinny is also an experienced educator and has taught classes at Bowling Green University, Kent State University, Asiago Music Conservatory, and others.

Dave Venn Trio

Pianist Dave Venn is a hometown legend. A St. Louis native, Venn began his professional music career as a tenor saxophonist, performing with the Jazz Central group and various other local bands. In the 1960s the St. Louis jazz scene was flourishing in places like Gaslight Square, The Playboy Club, and the DeBaliviere area. With more opportunities for pianists than saxophonists; Venn began his career as a jazz pianist.

Venn has accompanied countless renowned singers and instrumentalists who have performed in St. Louis. He is in demand both as a soloist and with his larger groups, regularly appearing at the top clubs, hotels, concerts, and other venues throughout the area. Venn has been named the “Best Local Pianist/Keyboardist” by the Riverfront Times and continues to be revered by St. Louis audiences.

Rick Haydon Trio

Guitarist and educator Rick Haydon is widely respected as an authority on 7-string guitar. A student of Johnny Smith, Howard Roberts, Pat Martino, & most recently Bucky Pizzarelli, Haydon was recently named Director of Jazz Studies at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. In addition to the SIUE program, which he helped build since first joining the faculty in the mid-1980s, Haydon is also on the faculty of Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Band Director Academy and the Birch Creek Music Center. Haydon’s recent album “Just Friends” with fellow 7-string advocate John Pizzarelli reached #19 on the Jazz Week radio charts and his current album “4” features an all-star quartet where he’s joined by organist Reggie Thomas, trumpeter Clay Jenkins & drummer Gary Hobbs.

Robert Glasper Trio

Gracefully navigating the zone where jazz and hip-hop converge, pianist Robert Glasper is a savvy improviser well-versed in, but not constrained, by jazz tradition. His work has attracted some of the era’s definitive R&B and hip-hop artists, including Mos Def, Kanye West, and Erykah Badu. He’s been equally productive in the jazz world, accompanying modern masters such as Roy Hargrove, Kenny Garrett, and Terence Blanchard. On 2009’s Double-Booked, Glasper employed his acoustic trio for half of the tracks before switching to an electric format (Robert Glasper Experiment) on the second half. The record ended up on many jazz critics’ Top 10 lists, further cementing Glasper’s reputation that year and beyond.
