The Jazz St. Louis’ Adopt-a-School program is part of the Whitaker Jazz Education Initiative and is one of several programs supported by a generous grant from the Whitaker Foundation. The adopted schools receive a high level of involvement from Jazz St. Louis that includes programming and services tailored to each school’s needs.
Jazz St. Louis partnered with the Normandy School District in the fall of 2007. And, in 2008 began a partnership with the East St. Louis School District. With grants secured from the Monsanto Fund, Jazz St. Louis has purchased new instruments for both programs, CDs for a jazz listening library and sheet music for their respective jazz programs. The Adopt-a-School program also allows for visits by both world-class artists and the area’s finest educators. During the 2008-2009 season Eric Reed, Metta Quintet, Nnenna Freelon, Carla Cook, Jacky Terrasson, Bruce Barth, Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard and Terell Stafford worked with students in Jazz St. Louis’ two adopted school districts.
