Catherine Russell Quartet

Catherine Russell CD Cover“a wonderfully charismatic performer with a show-stopping voice and an unabashedly old-fashioned repertoire.” – The Washington Post

Songstress Catherine Russell continues to build on her already considerable renown as one of the foremost interpreters and explorers of mid-20th century American music. Russell is now covering a wider range of music than ever before, from the earliest days of jazz through the swing era and into the rhythm and blues explosion, but all with her personal stamp. For this, Russell draws upon the inspiration of her mother, pioneering jazz musician Carline Ray, and her father, long-time Louis Armstrong bandleader and arranger Luis Russell. This new approach follows a career that began decades ago, first as an in-demand background singer working with stars like Paul Simon, David Bowie, and Cyndi Lauper, then as a solo artist focusing on the bluesy-er side of jazz. During this time, esteemed critic Nat Hentoff of The Wall Street Journal declared that after hearing countless “purported rising jazz singers…it’s a delight to hear the real thing in Catherine Russell.” With her latest album, Russell has cemented her status as a pure, incredibly gifted jazz vocalist.
