CWAH Charity Benefit featuring Russell Gunn

Community Women Against Hardship Benefit Concert

If one were attempting to design a prototype for the quintessential contemporary musician, Russell Gunn is the model. Gunn’s early aspirations in the world of rap heavily influenced the way he learned and played jazz throughout his career. Rather than abandoning the music he loved, he simply applied its energy, spirit, and fiercely proud intellectual rage to the jazz idiom, creating a synthesis that is truly contemporary and singular. Gunn is equally adept and accomplished in both worlds, having played with jazz greats like Branford Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, as well as hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul artists like Maxwell, Cee-Lo, and D’Angelo. Gunn’s own music continues to straddle the line between hip-hop, soul, and jazz with incredible results.

For this performance, Gunn will be joined by vocalist Anita Jackson, pianist Adam Maness, bassist Jeff Anderson, and drummer Montez Coleman.  This show will include a special performance by students from CWAH’s Institute for the Advancement of Jazz Study and Performance.

Doors open at 5pm with the concert beginning at 6pm.
