Gregoire Maret’s Inner Voices

with special guest Alicia Olatuja

Gregoire Maret and Alicia Olatuja“one of the most creative musicians around.” – Herbie Hancock

Over the course of the past decade, Grégoire Maret has emerged as a unique and compelling new voice in the modern jazz world. That his chosen instrument – the chromatic harmonica – is a relative rarity in the genre is one element in his singular sound, but far from the whole explanation. After all, the extensive list of heavy-hitters who have enlisted him for their own projects is unparalleled: Herbie Hancock, Pat Metheny, Cassandra Wilson, and Marcus Miller are some of his most prominent employers. Maret has redefined the role of the harmonica, finding fresh pathways through a remarkable variety of styles. With “Inner Voices,” Maret explores the meeting of jazz and gospel with the help of St. Louis native vocalist Alicia Olatuja, who’s star has been rising in the jazz and gospel world since performing at the 2013 presidential inauguration. The New York Times praised Olatuja as “a singer with a strong and luscious tone and an amiably regal presence on stage.” Another St. Louis native, pianist/organist Shedrick Mitchell, will be on the stage for this show as well, making it a night of debuts and homecomings!
