Jimmy Greene Quartet

Jimmy Greene_eSRO“without a doubt one of the most striking young tenors” – Jazzwise

Saxophonist Jimmy Greene has spent most of his career as a hardcore, hard-boppin’ jazzman. Along with his many albums as a leader, he has appeared on over 75 recordings with the likes of Freddie Hubbard, Horace Silver, Harry Connick, Jr., and Jackie McLean. His latest recording, however, has Greene exploring new musical territory, including traditional spirituals and contemporary Christian music. This exploration comes from the celebration of the life of his 6-year-old daughter, Ana, whose life was tragically taken on December 14, 2012 in the events at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Beautiful Life is full of songs composed or arranged by Greene in the time following the loss of his daughter, and his melodic focus, abiding soulfulness, and customary authority over the tunes garnered the recording two Grammy nominations: one for Best Jazz Instrumental Album and the other for Best Arrangement. Greene’s performances with his quartet take all of his inspirations, from jazz to family, and create beautiful, serious instrumental jazz yearning to be heard and shared.
