Lionel Loueke

“Loueke’s playing and singing can be described only as remarkable. In his hands, the guitar was a virtual orchestra, surging with percussion effects, throbbing with rich, often dark harmonies, blending with his scat singing in sudden bursts of bebop pleasures.” Los Angeles Times

(Pronounced Lee-uh-nell loo-eh-Kay)

Originally from the small West African nation of Benin, guitarist Lionel Loueke has enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past several years. In 2008 and 2009, he was picked as top “Rising Star” guitarist in DownBeat’s annual Critics Poll. Praised by his mentor Herbie Hancock as “a musical painter,” Loueke combines harmonic sophistication, soaring melody, a deep knowledge of both African music and American jazz, and conventional and extended guitar techniques to create a warm and evocative sound all his own.
