Montez Coleman Group featuring Russell Gunn

Montez-Coleman-e1370015190580Montez Coleman, an East St. Louis native and Belleville resident, has toured the world with some of the biggest names in jazz. A long time member of the Roy Hargrove Quintet, Coleman has also worked with nationally recognized musicians like Rufus Reid, Russell Malone, and Wynton Marsalis, as well as local favorites Willie Akins and Erin Bode. Joining the Montez Coleman Group for these two special nights is trumpeter Russell Gunn, a bandmate of Coleman’s in the nationally recognized Lincoln High School Jazz Band in East St. Louis when the program was under the direction of Ron Carter.

Russell GunnIf one were attempting to design a prototype for the quintessential contemporary musician, Russell Gunn is the model. Gunn’s early aspirations in the world of rap heavily influenced the way he learned and played jazz throughout his career. Rather than abandoning the music he loved, he simply applied its energy, spirit, and fiercely proud intellectual rage to the jazz idiom, creating a synthesis that is truly contemporary and singular. Gunn is equally adept and accomplished in both worlds, having played with jazz greats like Branford Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, as well as hip-hop, R&B, and neo-soul artists like Maxwell, Cee-Lo, and D’Angelo. Gunn’s own music continues to straddle the line between hip-hop, soul, and jazz with incredible results.
