Meet Four Outstanding Young Men Your Gifts Support

The students pictured above are juniors from the East St. Louis Senior High School Jazz Band: Brady Lewis, trumpet, Carlos Brown, Jr., alto saxophone, Marvin Cooper, bass, and Everette Benton, drums. We are very proud to announce that their high school–one of our adopted schools–has been selected to travel to New York City as one of only 15 jazz bands throughout the country to participate in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Essentially Ellington High School Jazz Band Competition and Festival.

JazzU Focuses on the Individual

All four of these talented musicians participate in our education programs. Through JazzU, they receive free lessons every week from professional instructors and world-renowned jazz musicians. This unique program brings together the area’s brightest young jazz students–not just creating ensembles but a musical dialogue among students throughout the Metro area.

Adopt-a-School Closes the Gap

The support these young men receive from JazzU is mirrored in our Adopt-a-School program, which ensures a healthy music program for their school. Delano Redmond, Director of Jazz Studies at ESLH, says that the most valuable part of our education programs for his students is that they recognize the resources being poured into them, and that these resources “dissolve a learned helplessness” and “empower his students.” With steady guidance, these young musicians will continue to grow with their craft and advance the uniquely American art of jazz.

Over the next few weeks, we’ll introduce you to Brady, Carlos, Marvin, and Everette as we follow their exciting journey to New York City.

Donate now to help us raise $10K in 6 weeks to benefit these young men and students just like them.
