Calling All High School Musicians!!!

Submitted by Phil Dunlap on Wed, 03/19/2008 - 10:28.

Jazz St. Louis announces auditions for the 2008-2009 Jazz St. Louis All-Stars.

The Jazz St. Louis All-Stars are open to any and all high school students in the St. Louis region that are interested in auditioning. Auditions for the 2008-2009 season have been scheduled for Monday, May 19th 2008 and will be held at 4 pm at Jazz at the Bistro (3536 Washington Avenue, 63103).

Benefits of membership include weekly instruction from the area's finest educators, private lesson opportunities with Jazz at the Bistro artists, free admittance to Jazz at the Bistro shows, countless performance opportunities, including a weekend at Jazz at the Bistro as part of the Spotlight Series, and the opportunity to work with artists such as Christian McBride, the Yellowjackets, Pat Martino, The Bad Plus, Terell Stafford, Cyrus Chestnut and many more...

Audition Requirements and Procedures

To be eligible to audition, students must be in High School (grades 9-12) during the 2008-2009 school year and attend a school in the St. Louis metro area (Missouri/Illinois). Acceptance into the Jazz St. Louis All-Stars is based on a screened audition. At the audition, students will be asked to play a blues (in F or B-flat), a Latin tune and a jazz standard of their choice. A rhythm section will be provided for the auditions. Applicants will also be asked to play scales chosen from any of the 12 major or minor scales.

To sign up for an audition, send an email to phil@jazzstl.org. Include your name, grade, school and instrument. Also, include a short paragraph tell us why you want to be apart of the Jazz St. Louis All-Stars.

Great opportunity

I cannot stress enough what a great program this is. I have been a part of it for the past two years and the experiences I've had, the friends and teachers I've met, and the world-class performances I have seen will be something I will always remember as I continue on.

Besides the obvious performance opportunities, there are so many other perks (as mentioned above). Every single show at the Bistro is FREE! I thought I was lucky until I heard some of the names of the people coming through next year... Plus there are plenty of gigs to go around, lots of opportunities to immerse yourself in the St. Louis jazz scene, and chances to meet some 'famous' people : )

This year's groups play Friday, April 18 and Saturday, April 19 (Ill be playing Saturday night). There are some killin' little dudes in these groups : ) Come see what we're all about.
