Since its outset, iconic trio The Bad Plus has dared to be different, challenging all preconceived notions of jazz. Through a provocative style of arrangements and compositions they call “avant-garde populism”, their unique blend of influences, ranging from experimental jazz, indie rock, pop, and classical music has earned this “audacious, rule-breaking jazz trio” (Billboard) a reputation as one of the most universally well-respected bands in jazz today. The intensely collaborative trio has constantly searched for rules to break and boundaries to cross, bridging genres and techniques while exploring the infinite possibilities of three exceptional musicians working in perfect sync.

2018 heralded a new and exciting chapter for the band consisting of founding members Reid Anderson (bass) and Dave King (drums) and new member Orrin Evans (piano) — a group of passionate collaborators with no single “leader.” Never Stop II is the first full-length release from this lineup, comprised entirely of original music with each member contributing fresh compositions. The New York Times calls it “an exhilarating document” that sparks an exciting new journey for the iconic group. The BBC summed up the band best when they said, “from album to album, The Bad Plus continues to evolve and improve.” They will never stop doing just that.

"A combustible trio with a book of finely orchestrated, catchy original tunes, and a knack for radically reconstituted pop covers."

"By any standard, jazz or otherwise, it is moving, mighty music…bad to the bone, hot players with hard-rock hearts."

"One of the great, true groups in jazz of the past 25 years."

Funky Butt Brass Band
More Info

It’s impossible not to have a good time when you’re in the presence of the Funky Butt Brass Band. This musical juggernaut brings funk, soul, rhythm & blues, rock, pop, jazz, and anything else they might find under the kitchen sink together to give audiences a truly memorable experience each time they step on stage. Inspired by the brass band tradition of New Orleans, Funky Butt puts their own St. Louis stamp on everything they do…and we wouldn’t have them do it any other way!

“How did St. Louis exist so long without a true, bonafide New Orleans-style brass band? Since Funky Butt Brass Band came on the scene, it’s been impossible to miss the six-headed beast. At parades, at barbecues, at community radio festivals and especially at a certain oyster bar on Broadway, Funky Butt is a steady-gigging presence that references its Crescent City inspiration, but infuses plenty of 314-specific funkiness as well. Credit the oft-theatrical vocalizations of members Tim Halpin, Adam Hucke and Aaron Chandler for the band’s never-the-same-set-twice bravado, but recognize that “brass” is in the band name for a reason: These cats can blow.”
