Jazz Academy

Jazz Academy is a FREE music and leadership development program for middle school students who have an interest in performing music and want to strengthen their abilities on their instrument. Open to students in 6th through 8th grade, Jazz Academy members meet weekly, after school at Jazz St. Louis (at the Harold and Dorothy Steward Center for Jazz in Grand Center). Each week, Jazz Academy students participate in a variety of activities, ranging from individual music lessons and ensemble classes with the area’s best teachers, to tutors that work directly with students on homework. The inaugural year of Jazz Academy will begin in October of 2017 and will conclude in June 2018 with a weeklong day camp. Below is a sample of the weekly schedule.

3:30 – 4:30 pm, Snack & Wind Down
4:30 – 5:30 pm, Homework tutoring, other academic support
5:30 – 6:30 pm, Individual Instrument Instruction
6:30 – 7:00 pm, Dinner
7:00 – 8:00 pm, Ensemble Rehearsal
8pm, Departure

Saturday Leadership Academy
In addition to the weekly, after-school session, one Saturday each month, students will attend our Saturday Leadership Academy at the Steward Center for Jazz. The Leadership Academy will focus on cultivating leadership and team work skills while continuing to develop students’ musical abilities. Saturday Leadership Academy activities range from teambuilding workshops, to music master classes, yoga and field trips to local institutions. Below is an example of the Saturday Leadership Academy schedule.

At this time, Jazz St. Louis’s Jazz Academy is open to middle school students in select school districts. To be eligible to attend Jazz Academy, students must be in grades 6 – 8 and attend middle school in one of the following school districts:
Riverview Gardens
Normandy Schools Collaborative
Saint Louis Public Schools
