Blues Composition

  1. Review the lyric form of the blues and how the blues can be used to express emotion. If needed, listen to “Backwater Blues” again.

  2. Ask the class if anything makes them sad or upset. As a class, discuss ways for them to feel better or work through their problem. Write both the problem and the solution on the board.
  3. Use this to create a verse of a blues, following the lyric form:STATEMENT – RESTATEMENT – RESOLUTION
  4. Pass out the Blues Composition Worksheet and have each of the students work on creating their own blues lyrics based on an experience in their life. Emphasize that the blues can help them work through problems or even express joy in their lives.
