JazzU places talented middle and high school musicians in small jazz combos which meet weekly between September and May. Groups focus on improvisation, ensemble playing, jazz repertoire, listening strategies, and music theory. Students not only get the benefit of working with JazzU faculty, but also the opportunity to meet and work with musicians participating in the Jazz St. Louis Artist Residency Program, attend special masterclasses, participate in the JazzU Big Band, and perform on the Jazz St. Louis stage.
Program Details
Student Eligibility
To be eligible to attend JazzU, students must be in any grade 6-12 in the 2026-27 school year and live close enough to attend weekly rehearsals.
Time Commitment
JazzU groups meet once a week at Jazz St. Louis. Scheduling is based upon student availability to accommodate everyone’s schedule as much as possible. Students are required to be at weekly rehearsals with minimal exceptions. Additional activities will be communicated at the start of the program year.
Tuition & Fees
We are able to offer accepted students scholarships that cover the cost of participation in the program. These scholarships allow us to keep JazzU free for all students.

JazzU All Stars
The Jazz St. Louis All-Stars comprises the top students in the JazzU program. Placement in this group is a result of JazzU auditions in the spring. The All-Star ensemble serves as JSL’s cultural ambassadors at many area events.
