INFORMATION ABOUT JAZZ ST. LOUIS

The mission of Jazz St. Louis is to lead our community in advancing the uniquely American art of jazz through live performance, education, and outreach. Established in 1995 by the late Barbara Rose, who sought to bring high quality jazz performances back to the St. Louis community, the original “Just Jazz” performance series became Jazz at the Bistro and incorporated as a 501 (c)(3) in April 1998. A grant from the Whitaker Foundation in 2000 funded the organization’s first education and outreach programs. In January of 2006, the name of the organization was changed to Jazz St. Louis to better reflect the emphasis on education and outreach, with the name Jazz at the Bistro used to refer to its nationally-acclaimed performance series. JSL is an exceptional, successful arts model in the United States–one of only a few nonprofits in the country that presents jazz, educates future audiences, and nurtures budding musicians. JSL has reached over 100,000 students through its educational programming and serves one of the most diverse populations of any arts organization in the area. The Missouri Arts Council named JSL as Missouri’s Outstanding Arts Organization for 2011. Additional information is available on our website at www.jazzstl.org.
