Through the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, a community of lifelong learners age 50+, Jazz St. Louis is excited to present an engaging 8-week course entitled Why Jazz Matters. This course provides a captivating exploration into the essence of jazz music and its significant role in 20th century history. Delving into the evolution of jazz, the course illuminates its impact on social and political arenas, culminating in a live performance by the Sherman Irby at Jazz St. Louis. Participants will engage with the unique characteristics of jazz and its influence on various music genres, deepening their understanding of this transformative art form.
Designed to be both engaging and educational, the course will enhance appreciation of jazz through interactive listening sessions and analysis of seminal jazz compositions. This immersive experience, enriched by the live performance of Sherman Irby, is ideal for anyone eager to delve into the depths of jazz music, its historical significance, and its vibrant presence in contemporary culture. The class, led by JSL’s Director and Manager of Education and Community Engagement, Adaron Jackson and Dr. Travis Lewis, will feature a variety of special guest speakers, including JSL’s President and CEO, Victor Goines.

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Washington University in St. Louis is a membership organization that offers interactive courses and lectures. Membership is open to adults age 50+; previous Washington University participation is not required. OLLI is part of Washington University’s University College. OLLI classes are not for credit; there are no exams and no grades. You do not have to have a previous relationship relationship with Washington University to participate.
